When did you start your health journey? And what prompted you to want to make a change? I have been on “diets” my whole life. I had always gained back more weight than I lost. I knew that in order for something to work, it was going to have to be a “lifestyle change”, not just another diet. I began to watch as my wife, Kelley, started working out at the gym, and I saw her begin to have more energy. I knew that with my weight at the current level, I either had to make a change or prepare to die! It was honestly that simple.

What is ONE thing you learned from participating in ALL-IN FIGHT CAMP challenge that will help you continue your journey with an ALL-IN attitude? The one major thing I learned from this challenge that will help me continue with an ALL-IN attitude is accountability! My mom was my partner, and I loved being able to go to her with the highs and lows of the challenge, and know that I wasn't alone! I also got a lot of comments by posting my challenge posts on my personal Facebook page, and it helped keep me accountable knowing that others were aware of my journey. It also gave me motivation from places I wasn't expecting and reminded me that I am able to be an inspiration to others. What is ONE thing you learned from this challenge that will help you continue your journey with an ALL-IN attitude? One thing that I learned from this challenge is that it’s not all about me! I loved doing the partner challenge because it allowed me to share my victories/struggles with my partner. It took the focus off myself and placed it on us as a team. What is ONE thing you learned from this challenge that will help you continue your journey with an ALL-IN attitude? I learned that no matter how many times you make a bad choice on eating, don't work out, etc., wake up the next morning with an attitude to win, to make better choice, keep trying! Do better the next meal or workout the next day. Keep going, and don't justify your choices. Own them and learn from them. What is ONE thing you learned from participating in ALL-IN FIGHT CAMP challenge that will help you continue your journey with an ALL-IN attitude? I learned every choice you make, even the smallest choices, make a difference. In the end, did you get the results you desired...physically? spiritually? I did not get the results I hoped for, but I did feel better about myself. I just felt better. Spiritually, I am not where I want to be. Both are going to take practice. What factors do you believe contributed to your success? or lack thereof? I think what helped me (succeed) is having my sister hold me accountable. What is your next step on your continuing your health journey? I need to get back to making goals each week and stick to it. I have slacked off a lot since the challenge ended. (I gained 6lbs and lack of energy.) My life got busy and stressful, and I let it get in my way. What is one word of encouragement you would give someone who is struggling with their health journey? Keep at it daily. Even the smallest choices that you dont think matter do add up. Anything else you'd like to share? I have learned so much from this group of ladies. With this (SWEAT CLUB) group, I love that it's not focused on just the weight. It is focused on God and how we need to take care of our bodies. THE BEFORE... I started the journey to my new lifestyle in January of 2013 when I was lucky enough to have Iris’ daughter in my Pre-K class at Goddard. After randomly asking Iris some advice on a healthy snack option, she came to me and asked if she could train me 3 times a week for a month before they went back to Texas. I had mixed feelings. I was excited, scared, motivated, nervous and pretty skeptical. I had been working with a trainer already for about 2 months and there was no change. I was actually gaining weight and when you weigh 202.2 lbs gaining weight is NOT what you want to see. We immediately started working out and every 3-4 days I was losing about 5 pounds at a time. In a week and a half I had dropped 12 lbs and I was beyond excited. ank You and praise You, O God... You BEGINNING MY JOURNEY I had been saying for months that I was going to start eating healthy and exercising because my oldest daughter is severely over weight and I needed to do something before it got out of hand. Well, needless to say I didn't do it, and a lot of time passed me by. Well in August of this year, my daughter started having lots more medical problems and was diagnosed as pre-diabetic/insulin resistant and fatty liver. Then the very next day my husband was hospitalized with diabetes as well. His blood sugar level was at 783, which was very dangerous and at that point was when I realized I was killing my family. It broke my heart because I'm mom...I'm supposed to ensure my family is healthy and taken care of. AndI wasn't doing my job--so at that moment I made a change from within. I prayed and asked God to show me how to do it and to give me strength to do it. So on August 7th, I made a commitment to change my unhealthy way of life! For me being fit should be fun, and if you can do it while doing something you like that is even better. Here is my journey… Jimmy and I met in Waco and have moved a few times with his job as a coach. Once Katy was born, I would take her to daycare every morning. I would grab breakfast each morning at a convenient location nearby. Plus, since I don’t like to cook and the planning that it takes, we ate out a lot. With this lifestlye, I was gaining weight. The biggest lie I told myself was “I can’t”, when what I really meant was “I won’t.” I had heard about Foundations 6:19, however, I didn’t want to commit to something only to let myself down yet again. This fear of failure enabled me to continue to lie to myself. Then, there was Ida. I was helping at the school on a Thursday when she invited me to go work out. I asked everyone about it: “How bad is it going to be?” “Can I do it?” “Are ya’ll going to kill me?” I knew I was unhealthy and didn’t want to make a fool of myself. |
